I’m homeschooling 3 kids from Prek-1st. At our evaluation last year, the evaluator said he wanted to see more free writing from my oldest. The handwriting workbooks we were using were nice, but didn’t provide many opportunities for free writing (meaning, without a guide for the letters and for my son to pick topics he likes). Since handwriting is his least favorite thing, he told me to find notebooks like this where he can basically journal whatever he wants. He can tape or draw a picture to the top, then write a few sentences about it.This was SUCH a good idea! This little storyteller who doesn’t love drawing or writing, now has a place to tell stories about anything he likes! He’s written about a couple of field trips, when we went to vote, his favorite Pokemon… it’s amazing! Plus, his little sister (who DOES love to draw) wanted a book for herself. Then the preschooler wanted his own journal and he’s even writing a short sentence free handed now! Thankful they came in different colors, so they each know who’s book is who’s.Two caveats: The sample sentence on the front cover isn’t grammatically correct. It bothers me so much that I’m seriously considering modge-podging something on the front. Also, I really wish they weren’t so expensive! Depending on how many you buy, you’re paying $2-$3 a piece per notebook. I have a bunch of regular composition notebooks from school supply shopping that I got for $1 or less during back to school season. these notebooks require even less ink to print the pages because the top third is empty for a picture.I’d still say they are worth the purchase because after your kids know the basics of producing letters and they don’t NEED dotted guides, even $3 a composition book is less expensive than a $20 workbook from a curriculum company. They can use these, for practice writing, customize it to topics they like, and you get a cute journal out of it!Also, I forgot to mention they are the same size as what you imagine a composition notebook to be. I can fit all 3 in my larger purse for a day out with the kids. So glad our evaluator suggested this idea.
